Unfortunately the BlueTEC technology has gotten even more complicated. You saved a ton on cheap oil to arrive at this point. But there’s more. The tensioner had siezed! The OM651 also uses a single roller timing chain that’s at the rear of the engine. The owner has 123,000 miles on his Sprinter. I suspect it happens in areas with colder weather and high humidity. The only way you can keep this crud from building up in the air intake is with high quality oil, frequent oil changes and a Catch Tank. High detergent flushing oils can free-up the piston rings. The updated part numbers are in the bulletin. Service Bulletin LI09.40-P-063552 says sludge can block the oil passages. Over time, it’s the extreme heat cycles that does all the damage. In January 2015, a recall was issued for Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the OM651 turbo-diesel engine that were available for sale during 2014. KTS OM651.MP3.mp3 Problem noise. Dealers, Independent shops, mechanics and owners were all baffled by the endless problems. The DPF is the “Diesel Particulate Filter”. Diesel fuel must have at least 15 ppm of sulfur. Instead owners are told to keep the AdBlue topped off and take it in for service every 20,000 miles. Follow work instructions in the service bulletin. It wouldn’t hurt to ask. Motorcycle oil with the API “CF” diesel approval is more robust and designed to protect Timing Chains spinning twice as fast as any BlueTEC diesel. Mercedes published Service Bulletins about this same complaint 40 years ago. Most experienced Mercedes mechanics think this matter is solved as of 2016. –  AdBlue, DEF, SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and NOx sensors:  This is the area covered by the fraud recall. The list is different for everyone. If you wait until you notice the problem, you’ll have missed your opportunity. Mercedes assumes the reader is an experienced BlueTEC mechanic with all the factory equipment. The API “CF” diesel approval has more “soot scatter” then the factory oil. The OM651 four cylinder diesel is twice as hard as the OM642. Mercedes Service Bulletin GI01.10-P-056315 explains how this oil sludge destroys the engine. It may not display this or other websites correctly. If you ignore the “low coolant” light it can ultimately ruin the engine. Here’s the tough part of this problem. –  Oil filtration:  Diesel engines produce soot. I no longer have any affiliation with Mercedes-Benz or its authorized dealers. The Heat Exchanger is also a known problem (see LI18.30-P-059712 and LI18.30-N-056338), so it will need to be replaced. Mercedes puts a cheap oil plug in the dipstick tube that often blows out and sprays oil all over the engine. There’s a simple way to monitor the problem and catch it before it causes so much damage. In these vehicles, the seal ring between the timing chain tensioner and the engine may leak oil – this could result in a hazard for other road users and, in extreme cases, a fire risk (PRA 2015/14509). Genuine OEM timing chain tensioner for Sprinter NCV3 2.1L OM651, including both 2500 and 3500 editions. Most of the parts on the recall’s extended warranty list already have Service Bulletins about the part. The Press likes to say Mercedes installed a diesel defeat device. Maybe the idle is slightly rough when the engine is cold. This is where things get murky. This repair is outrageously expensive. It does not imply or indicate any affiliation or relationship between Stephens Service Center and the manufacturer or its dealers. After that date the Intercooler and hose were updated at the factory. Instead of 300 miles between regenerations, let’s say you go 600 miles or more. But the owner wants to know why the Turbo keeps failing? I’ve rewritten the article with these self reliant enthusiast in mind. A timing chain runs inside the engine, as it needs to be lubricated by the engine oil. As the Timing Chain stretches it changes the Camshaft Timing. The BlueTEC diesel is unlike any gas or diesel engine ever made. The exhaust manifolds should also have been replaced. You can edit all of these blocks by going to Style Properties -> Once again, this is one of the anomalies specific to each individual BlueTEC diesel and its unique operating conditions. The Turbo sucks in the metal flakes and damages the impeller. Putting their Van in the shop every few months is not good for business. BlueTECs burn oil because the piston rings are packed with burnt oil and the Cylinder Walls are Glazed. The DPF falls onto the road and give the people following you a gift they will never forget. Rattling Sounds While the Vehicle’s in Idle. The Heat Exchanger is warped and oil is leaking into the cooling system. Another possibility is the EBP (Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor / in the EGR cooler), the DPS (Differential Pressure Sensor) and the IPS (Intake Pressure Sensor p/n: 005.153.50.28 – green label) may need to be replaced or have a “Teach-in” performed. Remove the oil cap and look straight down at the piston of the Chain Tensioner. The Bulletins also say they should replace the exhaust manifolds with updated parts. Increased levels of soot content in the oil causes the Timing Chain to stretch. With a much lower NOACK value and a Catch Tank, what little oil vapor gets into the DPF will be significantly less than the factory oil. This machine operates on public highways. The DPF is located in the exhaust system. In reality, it’s the oil and excessive soot suspended in the oil that’s causing the Timing Chain and sprockets to wear so quickly. The simple guide will help you be aware of timing chain failure in your Mercedes. The problem is the hose is about 13mm too short. It’s definitely doable. There’s an easy way to prevent this. There are certain Polyol Ester synthetic motorcycle oils with the API “CF” diesel approval. But the cost of updating so many parts has put the BlueTEC out of reach for most owners. Every time the regeneration is interrupted unburnt diesel fuel washes past the piston rings and into the crankcase oil. Throw in all the other known problems and you’re at the cost of a factory rebuilt engine. See Service Bulletin LI49.10-N-067486. Believe me, it’s way cheaper to prevent a problem then wait until it happens. Delaying the inevitable only means the repair cost will increase. The factory approved MB229.52 oils are “low-SAPs”. The oil cooler is the most famous leak. Lovely, with 123,000 miles, it’s not likely Mercedes will pay for these things. The engine is ruined. The word 'Mercedes-Benz' is solely used to identify a make of automobile. If you have problems now, there’s no time to wait. no. Back to the original question, you’re at 80,000 miles with the factory recommended service history. Difference between old and new timing chain tensioner in an om651 engine! Most owners aren’t interested in making a hobby out of their BlueTEC diesel. The DPF can clog and the engine can stop running. Poor design really. I’ve learned a lot from talking to BlueTEC owners around the World. Even if this owner fixes the Turbo and all the other things mentioned in the Bulletins he will still have a bad timing chain. If you drive in constant subzero temperatures, there are other oils for that. Timing Chains can start clattering on cold starts as soon as 40,000 miles. Engines are often on backorder for several months. Condensation has entered the Intercooler (Charge air system) causing one cylinder to hydro lock. You can drive it until the the Timing Chain breaks and buy a new engine. The piston rings are stuck in their ring grooves. High concentrations of soot can increase the local acidic level and, around the piston where high temperatures and volatile gases coexist, corrosion will also occur. It’s hit and miss, most of the ones we see are taxi’s of unknown history and parts quality and usually using stop start (serviced elsewhere) Others seem ok without a hint of a rattle. Mercedes uses a cartridge oil filter that removes soot particles down to 30 microns. Then start driving. You should not ignore a knocking noise from the High Pressure Fuel Pump. Shouldn’t the dealer be responsible for the proper repair? My big question is, when I replace the tensioner, whether I should prime the new one of not. It may do this very intermittently when driving in cold weather at high altitudes. You should also give the engine a couple of minutes to warm-up in subzero weather. The BlueTEC has a PCV valve that sends the crankcase vapor into the Turbo where it continually recirculates through the EGR and the air intake system. Flush oil from the cooling system with Cooling System Cleaner, p/n: 002.986.42.71. Proactive maintenance is the only way to avoid the extreme heat caused by frequent regenerations of the DPF. See Mercedes Service Bulletins LI07.04-N-060527, LI47.20-P-045500, LI47.20-P-054504 and LI47.20-P-054958. Feel free to verify this with your dealer. You can sell it and take the loss. The cheap and easy fix was when it was new. (OM642 and OM651)  That breaks the Camshaft Gears. See Service Bulletin LI14.20-N-071638: The EGR cooling solenoid valve (Y27/13) intermittently sticks causing a lack of power. The heat cycle normally takes 15 to 25 minutes. The soot coming from a diesel is loaded with nitros oxides (NOx) and other cancer causing chemicals. This footer is unique to XenBase. MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER OM651 ENGINE REBUILD KIT - BRAND NEW! If Mercedes knows interrupting the DPF regeneration can cause engine failure, why didn’t they provide some way for owners to know when the DPF is regenerating? The extreme heat also puts a heavy thermal load on the engine oil. Engineers and mechanically inclined enthusiast actually love the challenge of a BlueTEC. I won’t say nobody knows what’s causing this, but it’s rumored Mercedes has bought back a couple of Sprinters because of this. I’ve put together a pdf file with all the oil leaks and the cheapest way to stop them. There is no such device. Its design allows coolant to enter the engine’s vacuum system and eventually enter the electrical, brake booster and vacuum pump. Motorcycle oil in a BlueTEC diesel? Install a Catch Tank and switch to a better oil filter. The recall should have started last October, 2020. E220d OM651 ????? The problem is, no one makes a Catch Tank specifically for a BlueTEC diesel. Once again, the repair cost is outrageous. The odds are you’ll still need to rely on the trained mechanic. You can take a picture of your odometer each time the DPF regenerates. You can’t wait until warning lights come on. Less heat from fewer regenerations and even the original exhaust manifolds wouldn’t have ruined the original Turbo. I don’t see them helping BlueTEC owners with anything. When soot clumps together it becomes more abrasive and wears the Timing Chain. Zinc can also “poison” the Catalyst. Head covers are aluminum as well. The dealer didn’t mention the recall and that’s understandable. So how should the owner handle these problems? And there is a tipping point where the repair cost will outweigh the benefits. It’s slightly different from one year to the next. It's a few hundred dollar repair. A shop test always shows the solenoid is normal because it’s not cold enough. I’ll go over all the stuff on your list of potential problems and you can decide what you want to remove from the list and what you want to take a chance with. You are using an out of date browser. All of these things cost substantially less than a Timing Chain. –  The DPS (Differential Pressure Sensor): The DPS tells the CDI computer when the DPF is full of soot and it’s time to start the automatic regeneration. They like to go way off the grid. The HPFP increases the fuel pressure to 23,000 psi. The DPS affects other parts of the system that aren’t so obvious. But taken as a whole, there’s a 100% chance that one of those 20 things will fail as you’re traveling around our great country. Simply put, owners have no idea what they’ve really bought. The engine and transmission must be removed to replace the timing chain. An Ester based synthetic 0W/30 would be the best choice. Please always check the part number before ordering. A broken timing chain will cause an engine to not start or fail while … However, there is a billet Catch Tank that works perfectly. I think condensation is getting in the valve and it freezes. If only it were that simple. Since the BlueTEC was introduced in 2007, I’ve spent every day working on this system and I still find it difficult. Starting in model year 2019, Mercedes includes the DPF Monitor. I’ve had to edit and expand much of the information I had previously sent to owners who had asked for help. You have to replace tensioner and ?? This is an easy $8,000 repair that’s easy to prevent. Sulfur is the lubricant in diesel fuel. But if the owner pays $68 and searches Mercedes technical website they’ll find a completely different service schedule that advocates much more frequent oil changes. The engine is ruined and the cost of repair exceeds the value of the car. Often at high altitude. BlueTEC fuel systems typically fail because the diesel fuel was contaminated with gasoline or water. Mercedes has updated and modified virtually every part in this system. There’s an easy way to lengthen the hose with a magnetic Power Steering filter and a better clamp. But why three Turbos? Main thing on the 4cyl OM651 diesel engine is to check for the timing chain is not clacking on a start from cold or after a oil change. No one has ever told me their Salesman or a Service Advisor ever explained the DPF monitor. The $40 Bracket has been updated twice. The primary timing chain for the OM656 engine is located on the flywheel side and acts directly on a sprocket attached to the crankshaft. But for owners who don’t understand the BlueTEC, it can stop being fun in a hurry. When the owner went to the Mercedes dealership, they got ten minutes with whoever wasn’t busy. A timing chain is made of metal, similar to a bicycle chain. Some late model 907 and 906 Sprinter’s with the OM642 report an intermittent problem of no power when the engine is near freezing. There are Block heaters, fuel, battery, oil and AdBlue tank heaters for subzero weather. Driving with #2 diesel fuel (Summer blend) into freezing weather can cause these same symptoms. E220d OM651 ????? To avoid problems, change the fuel filter every 20,000 miles with a genuine Mercedes fuel filter as per your VIN. Each one by itself has a 5% chance of failing. Service Bulletin LI03.10-N-071148 – dated 6/4/2020 (OM642 and OM651): Rough idle caused by bent connecting rod on one cylinder. Unfortunately, this owner’s engine finally locked up. Obviously a better solution would be to prevent fuel dilution before it happens. Even the parts in Mercedes service bulletins will normally be fine if you’re proactive with maintenance. I ask new owners if their Salesman explained the DPF monitor? If the spring breaks or the damper fails, the tensioner may bounce, causing an engine rattle. It’s not something the average owner will enjoy. Year after year Mercedes publishes Service Bulletins that say they are investigating the problem. You must log in or register to reply here. What are all the possible problems and how do you get to a baseline? The DPF has to regenerate more often. The RV Salesman spent hours explaining the coach and how it works. But for the owners who will read the Owner’s Manual, they should be able to find all of the important operating requirements. See Service Bulletin LI05.10-N … Starting in 2019 the OM642 diesel doesn’t come with an engine oil dipstick. Mercedes will eventually fix some of these things as part of the recall. From there, fuel goes into the fuel rails and injectors. if you’re still alive. When the filter housing is dry it takes a few seconds to fill, and the timing chain tensioner is after the filter in the oil supply line. Assuming the fuses are ok, I would replace the fuel filter. $374.94 MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER OM651 … As I said earlier, people who drive a BlueTEC diesel must be active participants. I’ve written the complete instructions for both versions. It took Mercedes 12 years to finally provide a DPF monitor. You don’t want routine repairs mixed up with recall repairs. #1- Keep the tank full. There are loads of other problems like the ones I’ve listed here. Compression is slightly lower on cylinder #6 in the OM642 and cylinder #2 in the OM651. Owners have problems with one part of the system and they hope they can limit the repairs to that one area. Upfitters are not allowed to alter things like the Intercooler. Which brings us to the most fundamental BlueTEC question. The extreme heat caused by the DPF regeneration will crack the welds in the exhaust. –  Fuel system problems:  The BlueTEC fuel system has two low pressure delivery pumps located inside the fuel tank. The wiring shorts out and you come to a sudden stop. It’s more of a hobby or lifestyle than basic transportation. A few days ago the owner of a 2012 OM642 Sprinter contacted me about a problem he was having with his Turbocharger. OM651 Noise Solution? I looked at his Repair Orders and the dealer replaced the Turbo, changed the oil each time and cleaned the Intercooler. Whatever the cause, tiny flakes of metal from a damaged HPFP will contaminate the fuel rails and injectors. Direct Injection is the current fuel injection design used by most manufacturers to reduce emissions. The dealer wants him to pay dealer cost for a new Turbo and the dealer will pay the labor. But I do explain what to get, part numbers and where to order things. While the diesel fraud settlement clarified the most difficult aspects, it’s made it more difficult to explain. It removes all the dirty crankcase oil vapor that normally goes into the Turbocharger. You change the timing chain when it's starts rattling. Since the owners of model years 2007 to 2018 have no way of knowing when the DPF is regenerating, Service Bulletin LI18.00-N-054809 tells dealers to inform their customers about the engine damage caused by fuel dilution. Today’s best diesel oil will suspend soot particles within the lubricant and keep them from clumping together. Mercedes published many service bulletins about the DPS. Most of what I send is stuff Mercedes has published or admitted to. Don’t forget, the radiator has rubber seal between the plastic tanks and the metal cooling fins.
